A Catholic chapel in the Torre Espacio skyscraper in Madrid
The highest shrine above ground level is in the Grupo Villar Mir skyscraper in the new business area of Madrid, the capital of Spain. It has an area of 150 square meters, and capacity for 60 people. A flashing green exterior light indicates the exact point on the 33rd floor where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved.
This skyscraper, which is called Torre Espacio, is one of the most modern buildings in Europe, with capacity for 3,000 workers, and houses three embassies: the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Netherlands. The skyscraper, which has a gym and several restaurants, why shouldn’t it also have a Catholic chapel? This was the approach of a group of workers from the Villar Mir Group to the management of the group, and the origin of what is today the most modern oratory in Spain. Torre Espacio, located in the new business and financial center of the capital called Cuatro Torres, is a 236-meter-high building with 57 floors.
The president of the Villar Mir Group himself welcomed the idea with great enthusiasm, gave a room and gave all the facilities to equip it in accordance with the criteria received from the Archbishopric of Madrid. On February 3, 2010, Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela blessed the skyscraper and the Chapel, which remains open every day. Daily Mass and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament are celebrated there. The chapel was conceived without any intention of breaking a world record and is located 135 meters above ground level, with views of the mountains and the north of the capital.
It is a joy for Catholics around the world initiatives of this type. We should make regular visits to the Blessed Sacrament that is closest to our home and stay with the Lord for a while to keep him company. Here are some texts for when you go to see the Lord on different days of the week: http:///lecsemana.html
