A CURIOUS PENANCE
Saint Philip Neri was a saint with great common sense. He treated his penitents in a very practical way.
A lady had the habit of confessing to him very regularly and almost always had the same sin to repent of: that of slandering her neighbors. For this reason, San Felipe told him:

The false rumors we tell about others, the lies we spread, we don’t know where they end up, or what harm they can do. It costs a lot later to want to fix what we have spoiled. It is impossible to rectify what we have said. And speaking ill of others is one of the things that can do the most damage in your environment.
