A glass of milk

A glass of milk

One day a poor boy who was selling goods door to door to pay for his college studies found he had only a single dime left and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for food at the next house. However, his nerves gave him away when a charming young woman opened the door for him. Instead of food he asked for a glass of water.

She thought that the young man seemed hungry, so she brought him a large glass of milk.

He drank it slowly, and then asked:

-How much do I owe you?-

“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “My mother has always taught us never to accept payment for an act of charity.”
He told her… -Then, I thank you with all my heart…!-

When Howard Kelly left home, he not only felt stronger, but also his faith in God and man was stronger. He had been about to give up and leave everything.

Years later, that woman became seriously ill. The local doctors were confused. Finally they sent him to the big city. They called Dr. Howard Kelly to consult him. When he heard the name of the town where the patient came from, a strange light filled her eyes.

Immediately, Dr. Kelly went up from the hospital lobby to his room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown, he went in to see her and recognized her immediately. He returned to the observation room determined to do everything he could to save her life. Since that day, he gave the best attention to this case. After a long fight, she won the battle..! She was fully recovered..!

Since the patient was already safe and sound, Dr. Kelly asked the hospital administration office to send him the full bill for approval. He reviewed it and signed it. Also, he wrote something on the edge of the bill and sent it to the patient’s room.

The bill arrived in the patient’s room, but she was afraid to open it, because she knew it would take her the rest of her life to pay all the bills. She finally opened it, and something caught her eye: On the edge of the bill she read these words…

“Paid in full many years ago with a glass of milk.” (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.

Tears of joy flooded her eyes and her happy heart prayed like this: “Thank you, God, for your love has been manifested in human hands and hearts.”
