CHRISTIANNEWS.COM. –African children in the eastern region, who have mental or motor disabilities are chained or severely abused by their parents, reported Mission Networks News.
The parents of these children do not have any specialized guidance on the treatment they should give their disabled children. They are even seen as curses or bad omens.
For this reason, it is common for these children to often remain locked up, malnourished and isolated from society.

Set Free Ministries executive director Dean VanderMey warns that many times these disabled children are thrown from their homes and left to die even as newborns.
“They really put them in the jungle and let the wild dogs come eat them sometimes. Then it’s even worse than you think. Sometimes they are not just chained to a post ”.
Set Free has been working in East Africa since 2005. They were initially invited to Uganda, then expanded to other countries in the region.
VanderMey says it was heartbreaking to see children who were rejected by their families. They knew they had to respond as a Christian ministry.
This body supports 17 Christian schools in Uganda, Kenya and Sudan. Students can attend schools and are taught about the love of Christ.
robert’s story
VanderMey shares a story about a boy named Robert. When he was around three or four years old, Robert suffered severe abuse that left both of his legs broken and twisted.
“Her feet were actually pointing backwards. He was dumped along the road and left for dead,” VanderMey shares. “A local family saw him…and they took him in.”
“We invited him to come to one of our schools even though he was severely disabled. And not only that, but we had some donors who wanted to help repair his legs. So he went through four very extensive surgeries.”
“Today, Robert can run, he can walk, and he is the valedictorian of his class. He is the valedictorian and he is a brilliant young man.”
The 2,000 students at Set Free schools receive vocational training of some sort, such as bookkeeping, farming, motorcycle repair, sewing or cosmetology.
“We are seeing many children who have been loved for life. Love covers a multitude of sins.”
