Apocalyptic plague of mice terrorizes cities in Australia

CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- Cities in eastern Australia have launched an alert due to a plague of mice that has plagued farmers as it is estimated that millions of dollars in damage to property and crops have been calculated so far, according to The Guardian.

This has prompted the NSW Government to create a $50 million bailout package and speed up approval of the world’s deadliest mouse poison.

According to the source, the plague could last up to two years if urgent and extreme measures are not taken to exterminate millions of rodents that plague the country’s farms.

This is supported by a farmers’ association called NSW Farmers, whose vice president, Xavier Martín, recently declared in local media that producers have been forced to abandon their pastures, farms and crop fields for fear that mice will eat all the harvest before they can extract it.

“Without a concerted baiting effort in the coming weeks this could easily become a two-year pest event,” Martin warned.

The Australian government announced that it was ready to distribute one of the deadliest poisons in the world for free, as soon as the states approved it.

NSW farmers say the simplest, safest and most timely way for the government to help farmers is to offer rebates of up to $25,000 per farm business to cover 50% of the cost of zinc phosphide bait.

Mouse infestations are actually semi-regular in Australia, thanks to a confluence of factors.

House mice (Mus musculus) are an introduced species on the continent, but very well adapted to withstand Australia’s harsh dry years, thriving once conditions become favourable.

“A single pair of mice can give rise to 500 mice in a breeding season,” explains Steve Henry, a researcher at Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO.
