CHRISTIANNEWS.COM- According to the Israel Antiquities Authority, on Monday (August 5), archaeologists found evidence of a luxury item, which is mentioned in the Bible.

These are small ivory panels, which had been inlaid, on wooden furnitureduring the First Temple period in ancient Jerusalem, reports Israel News.

The ivory panels were found near the Old City of Jerusalem, south of the Temple Mount, in the remains of a monumental building, dating from the 7th and 8th centuries BC, the peak date of the city before being destroyed, during the Babylonian conquestin the year 586 BC

As reported by Reli Avisar, Yiftah Shalev, Harel Shochat, Yuval Gadot, and Ido Koch, in the magazine Atiqot (Antiquities), this is the first time, that luxury furniture inlays are foundmade of ivory, in ancient Jerusalem.

mentions in the bible

This finding corroborates mentions that it is made several times in the Bible, always in the context of rich and powerful characters; Thus, it is said of the legendary King Solomon: that “the king also made a great throne of ivorywhich he overlaid with purest gold” (1 Kings 10:18).

Also, in the book of Ezekiel (27: 4-6) he mentions ivory, in the context of the beauties of the city of Tire: “In the heart of the seas, are your confines; those who built you, completed your beauty; of beeches from Mount Senir, they made all the timber for you; they took cedars from Lebanon, to make you the mast. Of Bashan oaks, they made your oars; your pine banks, from the coasts of Quitim, encrusted with ivory”.

other aspects

Ivory in the ancient Middle East, was derived from elephant tuskand then, as now, ivory was considered a prestigious item, especially when it was carved, and decorated, in an exquisite manner; like these found.

“The ivories may have found their way to Jerusalem, as a gift from Assyria to the Jerusalem nobility. After a comparison with the complete objects, appearing on wall plaques from the palace of the Assyrian king Sennacherib at Nineveh, we suggest that the plates of ivory from Jerusalem, were originally embedded in a sofa-throne,” Gadot and Shalev stated.

Some of the panels they were decorated with frames, with forms of rosettes, in the center of which, there was a stylized tree. Others carried lotus flowers, and some a geometric pattern.
