CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- The Southern Baptist Convention approved a resolution on June 14 where they define prosperity theology as a false doctrine that distorts the scriptures, reports Gospel+.
The resolution was held in Anaheim, California, in the midst of the denomination’s annual meeting.
Resolution 2 of the convention lists as a distortion of “biblical generosity” the message that “the sacrificial and expiatory death of Jesus grants believers health, wealth, and the elimination of sickness and poverty.”
According to the resolution, prosperity theology labels the sick as lacking in faith, preys on the vulnerable and corrupts biblical meaning.
Pastor JT English, director of Storyline Church in Arvada, Colorado, noted that the Baptist Convention had not addressed the issue of prosperity theology.
“We never spoke clearly as a body about prosperity theology in the form of a resolution,” JT noted.
Amendment
On the other hand, there were some modifications to the text of the resolution, such as notifying that “suffering” is one of the aspects that prosperity pastors indicate that good Christians should not suffer.
Another amendment offered was to reject “New Age” ideas that suggest the idea that God “wants us to be happy, healthy, and wealthy on this earth.”
However, this modification was rejected as an issue that needed to be dealt with more clearly.
The resolution on prosperity theology stated: “God and God alone is our highest good and our highest treasure, not health, wealth or the elimination of disease.”
