CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- The author of Harry Potter, JK Rowling, generated a bit of controversy with a tweet that apparently pointed to how soon rapes could be reported in Scotland.
“War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength,” she wrote, before delivering the line that sparked waves of social media furor and praise. “The criminal who raped you is a woman.”
Rowling’s message came along with a link to an article in The Times discussing proposed laws in Scotland that would supposedly result in police registering rapes committed by biological males as committed by a woman if the perpetrator identifies as female, even if there is no legal intent to cause a gender change to have occurred.
It is a problem that now receives a great deal of attention throughout Twitterverse after Rowling dove into the debate.
While some condemned the author’s response as “transphobic,” others praised her for what they saw as an honest assessment of the current cultural conundrums surrounding the transgender issue.
“There are some areas where biological sex matters, and rape statistics are definitely one,” author Milli Hill wrote. “Thank you for continuing to wake people up to these issues.”
Others took a different stance, condemning Rowling’s tweet and accusing her of attacking and defaming a marginalized group of people.
“I can’t imagine what’s going through your head that categorizes a group of people who are more marginalized and vulnerable than virtually anyone else as a threat,” Twitter user @JellyJen1 wrote. “It’s really upsetting and disappointing.”
As Faithwire has reported, this isn’t the first time Rowling has sparked a furor for speaking out on the issue of transgender people.
The author made headlines last December for denouncing the “climate of fear” surrounding the transgender debate. She has also touched on why she speaks so openly on the subject.
“If the sex is not real, there is no same-sex attraction. If sex is not real, the reality lived by women around the world is erased,” she once tweeted. “I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex robs many of them of their ability to meaningfully discuss their lives. It’s not hate, it’s telling the truth.”
Despite the continued push back against Rowling’s views, Sunday’s tweet appears to be evidence that she won’t be backing down any time soon.
