BRAZIL. – Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has clearly expressed his support for Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem – including the Old City – when he visited the Western Wall, one of Judaism’s holiest sites, together with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The president of Brazil expressed his support for the construction of the Third Temple in the city that is considered the “eternal and indivisible capital of Israel.”
Last Monday he entered the history of the modern Jewish state by becoming the first world leader to visit the Wailing Wall with an Israeli prime minister. Other presidents who preceded him, such as Donald Trump, preferred to see the holiest place in Judaism alone. The Brazilian leader once again staged the political idyll with the Israeli head of government whom he called “brother”, in the same Kotel square where the sacred wall is located.
On the occasion, Bolsonaro took the opportunity to make a small but significant request. “God, look out for Brazil,” the president prayed.

After posting the written petition on the Wall – a symbolic act performed by Christians and Jews around the world when visiting the holy site – Bolsonaro accompanied Netanyahu on a walk through the tunnels to the synagogue, located 20 meters below the point where Jews believe it is the “Holy of Holies” of the temple built by Solomon. In the place, Bolsonaro signed a book in the presence of the Israeli Prime Minister as a way of supporting the construction of the Third Temple in Jerusalem.
“When a book is signed in which there is a construction project for a temple where today it is a mosque, it is a sign of what is the political-ideological element of President Bolsonaro,” said Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, explaining the symbology of the act .
In addition to signing the book, the Brazilian president also learned about other aspects of the synagogue, such as the model of the Third Temple.
oppositions
In previous governments (led by the PT), Lula and Dilma belittled the relationship with Israel and gave support to Palestine. But Bolsonaro’s act marks a significant change in Brazil’s position on this issue and contrary to the UN’s own conductwhich in recent years has passed resolutions denying the relationship of Jews to holy sites in Jerusalem.
The international community claims that East Jerusalem is “occupied territory” and should be part of the final boundaries of a Palestinian state. This includes the holiest sites in Judaism: the Temple Mount and the adjacent Wailing Wall.
The Temple Mount where Israel intends to build the Third Temple is also the holiest site in Islam, known by the Arabic name Al-Haram Al-Sharif.
The international community did not recognize Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem in 1980 that in fact Israel has sovereignty over West Jerusalem, which it has held since 1948.
