CHRISTIANNOTICE.COM.- Dance is part of many cultures at a universal level and its practice is really ancient, even as described in the Bible.
Currently, there are many musical genres designed to be danced, such as Meregue, Salsa, Reggaeton and Bachata. However, their dances can be sinful and attract the sin of sexual immorality.
The first thing that a Christian must take into account is that there is no verse that condemns the act of dancing.
In fact the dance is part of the praise and is allowed when performed for God.
In the Old and New Testaments we can see various words referring to the dance, such as: “mâchôl”, “Raqqad”, “karar” Y “mechôlâh”.
The page Eternal life explains how these words were used in the biblical context:
- – Psalms 30:11: “You have changed my lamentation into dancing (mâchôl); you took off my rough clothes and clothed me with joy
- – Ecclesiastes 3:4: “A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance (râqad)”.
- – 2 Samuel 6:14: “David, clothed in a linen ephod, danced (kârar = swirled) with all his might before the Lord.”
- – Exodus 15:20: “Then Miriam, the prophetess, sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women came out after her with tambourines and dances (mechôlâh).
secular dance
Within the secular sphere we must take into account that there are dances that stimulate sexual desire. Even these dances are performed between unmarried men and women.
The page IsraelVenezuela indicates that the Bible condemns “lewdness”, that carnal attitude and that it is translated as “indecent movements of the body”.
Those who want to remain pure should avoid these sinful dances as they offend the Lord.
Also, Christians should stay away from sexual impulses outside of marriage.
The dance can also be related to non-Christian elements, such as discos, night clubs, the consumption of alcoholic beverages at parties, etc.
It is always important to keep in mind what the Lord indicates in Leviticus 11: 44 “For I am the Lord your God. Therefore, consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. So do not defile yourselves with any animal that creeps on the ground.”
