CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- A report from the Pew Research Center revealed that the majority of Americans embrace the existence of heaven. Some others believe that those who reject the existence of God can somehow still get there.
With religious statistics changing dramatically in recent years, this new analysis found that 73% of Americans believe in heaven and 62% believe in hell, Faithwire reports.
Interestingly, Pew said the numbers are similar to the last time the organization asked these questions in 2017, which doesn’t show much of a decline in overall perceptions of heaven and hell.
Among those who believe in heaven and hell, the general belief is that heaven is a place free from pain and trouble. Meanwhile, nearly one in five Americans (17%) do not believe in an afterlife at all.
Overall, 39% of Americans think that someone who doesn’t believe in God can go to heaven, and only 32% say that person “can’t go to heaven.”
Furthermore, it was revealed that evangelicals are the Christian cohort most likely to believe that a person must believe in God to get to heaven. 71% of those surveyed accept this ideal. Only 21% of evangelicals say that a person who does not believe in the Lord can get to heaven.
On the other hand, Catholics are the Christian cohort most likely to believe that a person who doesn’t believe in God can go to heaven, with almost seven in 10 adopting that notion. Only 20% of Catholics believe that a person who rejects God “cannot go to heaven.”
