. – As “religious discrimination” described leaders of the Chilean Christian churches, the position of not incorporating their flag among those installed in the building of the former National Congress of Chile.
They denounced that this violates religious freedoms, and generates uncertainty regarding the incorporation of regulations related to Christian foundations in the new Magna Carta.
“This is an open act of discrimination based on religion, and a majority religion for Chileans. It amazes us, it annoys us, it frustrates us, but above all it shows the inconsistency with which they are working in the Convention”, denounced the president of the Christian Conservative party, Antaris Varela.
“It is a serious offense that the president of the Convention, Elisa Loncón, has declared that Christianity is colonizing, and for this reason it will practically be left out of the Constitution,” added Varela, published by the Chilean newspaper La Tribuna.
More than a thousand signatures of pastors and bishops of the evangelical community, sent a letter to Loncón, highlighting his annoyance and concern for his discriminatory treatment against the Christian creed.
Censorship since last week
The controversy began last week, when in celebration of the first month of installation of the constituent, a series of flags representing the regions, sexual diversity and native peoples were displayed at the entrance of the Ex-Congress of Chile.
The conventional evangelical, Luciano Silva (independent by RN quota), asked Loncón to include the Christian flag, a request that was rejected.
“Chilean evangelical Protestantism was a persecuted minority for many years and was never associated with the throne or the Spanish sword,” the pastors objected to Loncón.
The president of the Council of Pastors of Los Angeles, Pastor Juan Herrera said that “we feel that with this they want to punish us…, they brand us as homophobic, that we reject and do not accept all this that has been taking place, so we consider that it should not being and, more than allowing us to put our flag, it is because of what we represent, which is the word of God”, he stressed, according to the Chilean portal Ex Ante.
