Christian artists criticized for mimicking secular concerts

CHRISTIANNOTICE.COM.- “Tomlin United Tour” reported that it would close its sale of VIP tickets after the questioning of several Internet users on social networks about their VIP ticket sales, reports The Christian Post.

In «Tomlin United Tour» the exponents of Christian music Hillsong United and Chris Tomlin will participate.

Christians were upset, as the event’s production was selling VIP booths that guaranteed access to the performers where they could take photos with them in a runway-style photo shoot.

VIP entry also provided premium seats, exclusive gifts and greetings.

Christians accused United and Tomlin of organizing a “commercializing” worship production with similarities to the secular industry.

Tom Read, the founder of the UK’s Modern Hymnal said via Twitter: “I’m not sure what’s worse: that Hillsong and Chris Tomlin think this is fine in the context of worship; or that there is actually a demand”.

Tom Read said he had been greatly influenced by Hillsong United and Tomlin, however for him the VIP box office was rather disappointing.

“Today’s worship has become so corrupt that I have no doubt that Jesus would change so many things,” he wrote. He added: “In my opinion, worship needs its own reform that gets rid of the celebrity culture that it is so ingrained in.”

He also said that “this will continue as long as we give it a platform to continue. So please don’t buy a ‘VIP Experience’ for worship events. It is the opposite of what worship should be. We need to do better.”

For his part, Chris Llewellyn, who is a member of the band Rend Collective, said VIP tickets help defray tour expenses.

“One of the main mechanisms by which large Christian concerts break even is through enhanced ticket sales — think of the ‘VIP experience’ — or through sponsorship,” he said.

“Tomlin United Tour” replaced the sale of VIP tickets with a modality to buy “experiences”.
