MONTERREY MEXICO. The black metal band Marduk canceled its presentation in Monterrey, due to protests by evangelical groups against the concert that the Norwegians would offer in the Monterrey capital.
The Monterrey city council did not give permission for the concert, scheduled for this Sunday the 14th, while the management of Café Iguana regretted the decision, made in attachment to religious groups.
Since September 25, the petition “We do not want Marduk in Monterrey and CDMX” was promoted on Change.org, which received more than 65,000 signatures. The petition alludes to the anti-religious nature of Marduk – they consider themselves “the most blasphemous band in the world” – as “an affront to Mexican Catholicism.”
The cancellation adds to a series of acts of censorship that the group has received in countries such as Panama, Ecuador, Guatemala, Costa Rica and El Salvador. The band’s concert scheduled for this Monday in Mexico City, until now, was still on
Marduk follows the aesthetics and themes of other Black Metal groups, with lyrics that question the apostolic Roman religions.
Evangelical Pastor Threatened
The evangelical pastor Servando Suaste Cruz said that he is discussing with his lawyers filing a criminal complaint for anonymous threats and insults that he has received through Facebook and by telephone because he was one of the promoters to cancel the Marduk concert in this city.
Suaste Cruz pointed out that whatever happens to him, his family or his friends in Christ, he holds the owners of Café Iguana responsible and those who have threatened him saying that they are very important people in Monterrey.
“I want to tell you that I am not an earthly authority with enough power to make that kind of decision, but that I am very at peace, since, thanks to the unity of the Catholic and Evangelical society, concerned about the youth of our city, the authority made this decision”, argued the evangelical pastor.
The Chamuco company, promoter of the Marduk concert, which suffered a financial loss of 100,000 pesos due to the cancellation due to the advance payment of fees to the Swedish metalheads, expressed its concern and disagreement.
He recalled that similar bands have performed on several occasions and that the same Swedish group had already played three times in Monterrey.
