churches resume worship services without restrictions

CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- After the prohibitions that California officials had filed for churches, the US Supreme Court lifted the veto regarding worship services in a California county.

The restriction called for places of worship to remain closed until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the fact that the high court had lifted a statewide ban on religious gatherings weeks earlier.

However, the Court ruled in favor of five Santa Clara County churches that are now allowed to resume services at 20 percent capacity.

The order even called the previous decision by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in favor of the county restrictions “wrong.”

The three liberal Supreme Court justices dissented, “This outcome is clearly dictated by this court’s decision in South Bay United Pentecostal Church v. Newsom,” the Supreme Court order reads.

Consideration

In a concurring opinion on the South Bay case, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that he understands the state’s arguments that singing indoors poses a greater risk of transmitting COVID-19, but he does not believe the state had a scientific reasoning for wanting to ban in person, and worship outright when some churches are big and cavernous.

However, the county sent a letter to the highest court in the nation citing continued cases of COVID-19 but noting that the ban would be lifted on March 3.

The response to this petition follows an ongoing lawsuit that was filed by a group of five churches across the country against the county order.

The five churches are Gateway City Church, The Spectrum Church, The Home Church, Orchard Community Church, and Trinity Bible Church.
