CHRISTIANNEWS.COM- The Iranian Christian convert, Mohammad Youhan Omidi, was sentenced to exile for two years and flogged 80 times after he drank wine at the Lord’s Supper where he was invited.
Omidi begins 2 years of exile. “I trust God, many people consider it a waste of time. But, seeing ourselves as a puzzle piece in the bigger picture that God is creating, I gladly accept this exile,” said the Christian convert.
In Iran, the penalty is sharpened for Muslims who choose to convert to Christianity because they do not recognize them and must act according to the laws of their country.
The non-recognition factor has made converted Muslims suffer from persecution, especially those believers who have just made the decision to convert to Christianity.
Punishment
As a result of Mohammad’s misconduct, the Iranian authorities gave him 80 lashes in a public square; and then force him to walk more than 1,000 kilometers back to his home north of Borazjan.
This action became repetitive because in 2013 he had already received blows for introducing wine into the Lord’s Supper held in a home church.
His friends say that Youhan thanked “the slight indulgences” that those who carried out the sentences had with him after explaining to them that the wine inside the Holy Dinner is only an act of worship to God.
Muslims can drink alcohol, but with restrictions. This follows from a fatwa decreed by Yusuf al Qaradawi, the popular Egyptian cleric who leads the religious Sharia and Life program.
Contrary to what the Koran establishes, which explicitly prohibits the consumption of any amount of alcohol, Qaradawi ensures that Muslims can drink drinks that have up to 0.5% alcohol.
