Death sentence confirmed for two Christians in Pakistan

CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- The hopes of freedom for two Christian brothers on death row under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws have been dashed.

This month a Pakistani court upheld his death sentence despite a lack of evidence against him. This was stated by his lawyers, reports Morning Star News.

Qaiser Ayub, 45, and Amoon Ayub, 42, have been jailed since 2014. And their death sentence appeal to the Lahore High Court at Rawalpindi Bench had been pending since 2018.

Judge Raja Shahid Mehmood Abbasi and Judge Chaudhry Abdul Aziz took up their appeal on February 28, but did not announce their verdict until June 8, lawyer Khurram Maan said.

“We had high hopes that the judges would take note that the trial court had convicted our clients based on shoddy investigation and evidence. But we were surprised when the court announced its verdict on June 8, after a delay of three months,” he noted.

Bashir said the brothers, who are being held at Sahiwal District Jail, were “very saddened and disappointed” when they were informed of the appeal verdict.

“Qaiser has three children, while Amoon has no children. Both men were devastated when they learned that their plea for justice had been denied,” he explained.

The case against the brothers was registered in June 2011 on a complaint by Talagang resident Muhammad Saeed. Who claimed that he found a blog containing blasphemous material against the prophet of Islam, Muhammad.
