– Edgar Humberto Gasca Arceo, deputy from the Morena party, proposes an initiative to reform the Law for the Prevention and Treatment of Addictions in Quintana Roo (Mexico).
The purpose of his proposal is for religion to be considered an addiction just like gambling, the internet, sex, work, etc.
The deputy considers that addictions are not limited solely to the consumption of products that imply collateral damage in the people who ingest them.
But it can also be classified as some harmful behavior, both for the same person and for their closest environment.
“Considered as a health problem, addictions are physical and psycho-emotional diseases or a debilitating disorder that creates a dependency or need for a substance, activity or relationship, which manifest themselves constantly in the human being and that have been become one of the greatest dangers for Mexican society and families,” Gasca said.
without clarity
In the proposal raised by the deputy, the concept that he understands by religion is not clarified, nor is a reasoning about whether reading the Bible daily turns someone into an addict.
Without an in-depth explanation and with little argument, Gasca intends to classify religion as an addiction and pigeonhole it with aspects such as sex, gambling and the internet.
It is presumed that the politician manifests a total ignorance of human behavior and especially of the freedom of worship that exists in Mexico.
Study
A recent study by US scientists found evidence that religion and religious experiences activate reward circuits in the brains.
Understanding each other in a very similar way to what love, sex, betting, drugs and music do.
Research conducted on 19 Mormon individuals found that when asked to “feel the spirit,” their brains turned on.
The young people experienced a sensation as if they had ingested or used a drug or listened to their favorite song.
Jeff Anderson, one of the authors of the research, believes that this is the understanding of how the brain participates in experiences that believers interpret as spiritual.
