Dictionary alters definition of “family” to include gays

BRAZIL. – The next edition of the Houaiss Dictionary of the Portuguese Language will come with the meaning of the term family changed. The decision to alter the definition is to serve as a counterpoint to the Family Statutes, which defines the word as the relationship between a father, a mother and her children.

Currently in the dictionary the term is defined as a group of people who live under the same roof. But for André Lima, a member of the NBS agency, such a definition “is reductionist and anachronistic.”

“The world is diverse, vast and dynamic. The current definition of family is reductionist and anachronistic. What we want is to update this configuration and contribute to the reflection on what the true bonds unite people in the form of a family”, he said.

The NBS decided to create the campaign # todasasfamílias asking the public to formulate definitions for the word. Based on what has been suggested, the experts will create a definition “without prejudices and limitations”.

This campaign has partnered with the City Council’s Special Coordination for Sexual Diversity and the Brazilian Association of Homoaffective Families who are disseminating videos showing families made up of gays.

“With the sum of opinions, the Houaaiss Dictionary has accepted the challenge of creating a single meaning to be placed in its next edition, so that the new generations know the most democratic sense of the family, broad and without prejudice,” says the text. of the campaign presentation.

The Family Statute, which will be considered by the Senate, legally restricts the family unit by what it only recognizes as the “union between a man and a woman through marriage or stable union, and the community formed by any of the parents and their children.”
