CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- The Bible does not mention the term “Halloween” or the druidic mystical rite “Samhain” from which Halloween is derived. But says, “Do not participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but expose them.” ( Ephesians 5:11 ).
Some view Halloween as a harmless holiday where children dress up and participate in various traditions. In American schools, more time is spent on activities centered on Halloween than on any other holiday.
In a recent letter to Ann Landers, a parent expressed concern. As a fourth grade teacher, she asked her students to write about how they would like to celebrate Halloween. 80% said that they would like to kill someone or something similar. In business, Halloween is a multi-billion dollar industry and highly commercialized.
Should Christians celebrate Halloween?
Is it just funny and scary? Should Christians participate in it? Let’s first take a look at the origins of Halloween.
Many Halloween customs stem from pagan superstitions related to Samhain. Druids were the priests, sorcerers, and magicians of the Celtic nature-based religions that were prevalent in early times in Northern Europe, which permeated Celtic culture for about 2,000 years until the rise of Christianity.
In the 9th century, the Roman Catholic Church moved All Saints’ Day, designed to honor Christian martyrs, to early November in an effort to offset the pagan holiday of Halloween. It had previously been observed in May. Some Protestant churches also celebrate All Saints’ Day.
Halloween is a demonic “holy” day
Halloween is one of the “holy days” in Wiccan practice, of wizards and devil worshippers, as well as being a secular tradition.
On this night, and the nights leading up to it, law enforcement officers note an increase in occult crimes and ritual murders, evidenced by symbolic markings at the scene, excessive blood loss in victims, and organs removed in a certain way from victims. . It is a time of greater kidnapping of children and animals.
Is there any reference in the Bible to these practices? Deuteronomy 18:9-14 says: “When you enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you will not learn to imitate the detestable things of those nations. There will not be found among you the one who makes his son or his daughter go through the fire, the one who uses divination, the one who practices witchcraft, or a medium, or a spiritualist, or the one who calls the dead«.
Many churches have children’s fairs and youth rallies, where parents who feel their children should not participate in Halloween can bring their children to participate in Christ-centered activities.
We can encourage you to let the Holy Spirit be your guide in the decision, and we also caution against insulting others, whatever your decision, but rather instead. “Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always ready to defend everyone who asks you to give an account of the hope that is in you, but with sweetness and reverence.” ( 1 Peter 3:15 ).
