CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- A Florida elementary school took a tour this week at a popular gay bar and restaurant, while being accompanied by a member of the school board.
Sarah Leonardi, a member of the school board, announced via Twitter who brought students from Wilton Manors Elementary School in Broward County to Rosie’s Bar and Grill, a local gay bar, last Wednesday, Christian Headlines reports.
Leonardi said: “It was an honor for me to be the chaperone on the trip to the bar. The students and I had a fun hike and learned a lot about our community. A big thank you to Rosie’s Bar and Grill for hosting this special outing every year.”
Opened in 2006, Rosie’s calls itself a tropical oasis offering “amazing food,” “refreshing drinks,” and “raunchy fun.” Menu items include “Naked Sweaty Lovin,” “Ivana Hooker,” and “Philly Deedee.”
In the wake of the controversy, Broward County Public Schools announced Thursday night that children received “student-friendly” menus and noted that the venue was not open to the general public during the field trip.
Still, many wonder if the establishment was an appropriate site for a school field trip. Leonardi’s Facebook post was filled with comments criticizing the idea.
“I guess elementary school has changed? I was a 4th grade teacher for years and I promise we went to museums, state house, parks,” one person wrote.
For his part, another person commented that: “Very grateful to have sent my 6 children to a private school.”
