Biblical passage about the golden calf

“1 When the people saw that Moses was taking a long time to come down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him: “Make us a God who will go before us, because we do not know what has happened to Moses, that man who made us leave Egypt»
2 Aaron answered them, “Take off your wives, your sons, and your daughters, the gold rings that are attached to your ears, and bring them here.”
3 Then they all took off their earrings and handed them to Aaron.
4 He received the gold, worked it with the chisel, and made a calf of molten metal. They then said, “This is your God, Israel, who brought you out of Egypt.”
5 Seeing this, Aaron erected an altar in front of the statue and announced in a loud voice, “Tomorrow there will be a feast to the Lord.”
6 And the next morning, very early, they offered burnt offerings and communion sacrifices. Then the people sat down to eat and drink, and then got up to have fun.
7 The Lord said to Moses, “Come down quickly, because your people, the ones you brought out of Egypt, have perverted themselves.
8 They have quickly turned aside from the path that I had pointed out to them, and they have fashioned for themselves a calf of molten metal. Then they prostrated themselves before him, offered sacrifices to him and exclaimed: “This is your God, Israel, who brought you out of Egypt.”
9 Then he went on saying, “I see that this is a stubborn people.
10 Therefore, let me act: my anger will burn against them and I will destroy them. From you, instead, I will raise a great nation.
11 But Moses tried to placate the Lord with these words: “Why, Lord, will your anger burn against your people, the people you yourself brought out of Egypt with great firmness and a mighty hand?
15 Moses set out on his way back and came down from the mountain carrying in his hands the two tablets of the Testimony, which were written on one side and on the other.
16 Those tablets were the work of God, and the writing engraved on them was God’s writing.
17 Hearing the noise of the people’s acclamations, Joshua said to Moses, “There are war rites in the camp.”
20 Then he took the calf they had made, burned it, and ground it to powder. Then he sprinkled the powder on the water, and made the Israelites drink it.
21 Moses said to Aaron, “What have these people done to you that you led them into committing such a grievous sin?” (Exodus 32:1-11; 15-17; 20-21)

What is the golden calf?

The golden calf is not God, but a figure that men created to calm down and satisfy their desire for spirituality. According to the Gospel of Matthew, the golden calf is what the Lord Jesus calls Mammon or Money. In this regard, the Bible says: “No one can serve two masters, because he will hate one and love the other, or he will be interested in the first and despise the second. You can’t serve God and Money” (Matthew 6:24). Today we may not have the physical representation of a golden calf to bow down to, but it is worth asking what is our attitude towards money? Do we really love God more than the material? Who comes first in our lives and who do we trust the most?

Worship god

One of the first commandments of God is: “Will not have other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself any sculpture and any image of what is above, in the sky, or below, on earth, or under the earth, in the waters”. (Exodus 20:3-4). This shows us that worship is reserved exclusively for God, since only He is worthy of receiving our praise and the best we can offer him. That is why the apostle Paul always repeated in his letters: “To him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus, to all generations and forever! Amen”. (Ephesians 3:21)
