.- According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the famine is leaving Somalia in risk of “humanitarian catastrophe”.

At a press conference, Wafaa Saeed, the organization’s representative in the country, said that: “About 730 children died in food and nutrition centers between January and July of this year, but the figures could be higher, since many deaths go unreported”, reports G1 Globo.

On Monday, September 5, the director of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) of the UNMartin Griffiths, told the public some projections that indicate that famine will hit the regions of Baidoa and Burhakaba, in the south-central Somaliabetween October and December.

Martin says he is shocked by the level of pain and suffering endured by so many Somalis. And describes that he has seen “children so malnourished they could barely speak.” Recently, he was in Baidoa, the epicenter of the impending catastrophe.

According to UN projectionsextreme conditions could continue until at least March 2023.

“The Horn of Africa region is on track for the fifth consecutive period of lack of rain. The 2011 famine in Somalia claimed more than a quarter of a million lives, most kids”, pointed out the report.
