Jesus

We have all heard one of the nicknames of Jesus: Jesus of Nazareth, Son of God, Son of Man, but do we really know who Jesus really is? In fact, the Bible teaches us that his existence was first announced in the Old Testamentand later, both his life and his message were described in the New Testament. Let us discover, in the light of the Bible, why for Christians Jesus is the Christ.

Jesus Christ in the Bible

Jesus of Nazareth

We cannot deny that Jesus is a historical character. In fact, not only Christians recognize him as the Messiah and the Son of God, but also the entire humanity recognizes his existence in different ways. For example, in the Koran (holy book of Islam) Issa (Jesus in Arabic) is mentioned as the forerunner of Mohammed. Furthermore, Muslims also acknowledge his miracles and his birth through Mary. On the other hand, in the Talmud, one of the fundamental texts of Judaism, there are also some references to Jesus.

If we look at it in the light of the Bible, it can be said that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Judea, during the reign of Herod, and that he lived the first 30 years of his life in Nazareth. In fact, his birth or his Nativity has been recorded in the Gospels.

In addition, the episode of the Presentation in the Temple shows us that Jesus was educated according to the Jewish tradition by his mother Mary and his adoptive father Joseph, who was a carpenter by trade. When he turned 30 he began his “public life”, and three years later he was arrested and sentenced to death on a cross.

The Son of God: the third person of the Trinity

For Christians, Jesus is more than a man and a prophet. He is the Son of God, the Incarnate Word:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1); “The Word was the true light that, coming into this world, enlightens every man” (John 1:9)

Let us keep in mind that God became man through Jesus, to share our humanity and transcend it. He is the second person of the Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

On the other hand, we can see that, according to the Bible, in the three gospels (Gospel of Mark, Gospel of Matthew Y Gospel of Luke) the baptism of Jesus is narrated as an important fact of his life on earth:

“In those days, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And as he came out of the water, he saw that the heavens were opened and that the Holy Spirit descended on him like a dove; and a voice from heaven said: «You are my very dear Son, in you I have placed all my predilection» (Mark: 1:9-11).

In fact, the Scriptures capture these beautiful words that the Father dedicated to his Son at the moment of the Transfiguration.

Let us remember that the love between Jesus and his Father is unconditional, and that Jesus shows us his filial bond with God by calling him “Father” (for example in the Our Father prayer, that beautiful prayer of Christians that Jesus taught his apostles) . To finish this part, we can see that the Gospels recount countless signs and miracles that Jesus did during his “public life”, among these we can mention the wedding at Cana, the day that Jesus walked on the water, the resurrection of Lazarus, the multiplication of the loaves and many more… Let us bear in mind that, during his 3 years of public life, Jesus manifested the power of the Father liberating, healing, alleviating and consoling all those who came to him.

The lamb of God

Jesus is also known as the Lamb of God: in fact, John the Baptist introduced him saying: “The next day, John saw Jesus approaching and said, “This is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29). Let us keep in mind that Jesus gave himself as the Paschal Lamb of the Old Testament, when he offered himself as a sacrifice for humanity, fulfilling his mission of redeeming men and washing away the original sin that has damaged men since Adam.

This is how his passion, which began in Gethsemane after the Last Supper, and continued until his death on the Cross, were not only necessary steps to achieve the salvation of the world, but also opened the doors of access to the Kingdom of Heaven. .

The Messiah, the Savior of the world

The New Testament presents Jesus Christ as the Messiah awaited by the people of God in the Old Testament.

In fact, Jesus is the Savior that the Scriptures announced in the book of Isaiah saying: “That is why the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is pregnant and she will give birth to a son, and she will call him by the name of Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).

Furthermore, Jesus is a sign of the new covenant between God and men: “There is one God and one mediator between God and men: Jesus Christ, himself a man, who gave himself to ransom everyone. This is the testimony that he gave in due time of him” (1 Timothy 2:5-6)

Let us remember Jesus suffered violence, humiliation, rejection and injustice for us, but he responded to hostility with love and forgiveness. He gave himself to us unto death, without restrictions or conditions, in this way he redeemed the world and his resurrection reminds us of the victory of love over death.

The Resurrected

Jesus rose three days after being crucified, and as Christians we celebrate his resurrection on the day of Easter. Jesus rose from the dead to open the gates of the Kingdom for us and give us the Good news.

As children of God, we are not destined to die, but our life on earth has a meaning: we are called to eternal lifebecause the love and mercy of God have prevailed over sin, so just like the pilgrims of Emmaus, we can have the joy of being able to feel his presence in our lives
