Passage from the Gospel of John, chapter 15

“10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love. as I fulfilled the commandments of my Father and remain in his love.

11 I have told you this so that my joy may be yours, and that joy may be perfect.

12 This is my commandment: Love one another, as I have loved you.

13 There is no greater love than giving one’s life for one’s friends.

14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.

15 I no longer call you servants, because the servant does not know what his master does; I call you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I heard from my Father.

16 It is not you who chose me, but I who chose you, and appointed you to go and bear fruit, and that fruit be lasting. So everything you ask the Father in my Name, he will grant it.

17 What I command you is that you love one another.” (John 15:10-17).

Give your life for those you love

This passage from chapter 15 of the Gospel of John gives us details about the second commandment of the Lord, which consists of love the brothers. At the beginning of chapter 15, Jesus reminds his apostles that they must abide in Him to bear fruit, and also explains how to do it. Let us remember that the Lord can only be fully obeyed when we put into action the commandment of love, which allows us to go from being servants to becoming friends of God. Furthermore, in this passage, Jesus gives us the measure of perfect love, which consists of give his life for others, and this love must be delivered without exception, because Jesus commands us to love not only friends, but also enemies, and it is precisely in this way that the true children of the Father can be recognized (Matthew 5:38-48). Finally, it can be said that the earthly life of Christ is a continuous model of the commandment of love, whose maximum and perfect expression is summed up in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
