Kevin Max of Christian group DC Talk quits being evangelical

CHRISTIANNOTICE.COM.- Kevin Max, who was previously part of the Christian group DC Talk, says he is no longer an evangelical. Max was part of the popular 90s trio with Michael Tait, who now leads Newsboys, and TobyMac, a Christian rapper who is a solo artist.

Tweeting over the weekend, Max said, “Hello my name is Kevin Max and I’m a #formerevangelical.”

The hashtag #exvangelical -exevangélico- is used by people on Twitter to talk about leaving the evangelical faith after having negative experiences and frustrations with evangelical Christianity.

Asked by a Twitter user what had led him to become “ex-evangelical,” Max replied, “Years and years of experience, digging, living…”

When one person asked him if he no longer believes in Jesus, he replied: “No, I didn’t say that, read the text carefully.” He clarified in another post that “I remain a universal follower of Christ…and the universe is bigger than you and me.”

“I have no idea how many people on blogs or podcasts are using this ad for further division, but I’m here for The Grace,” he said.

“For all those people who use my post as a plug & play for their own personal speech, I offer you the lyrics of an upcoming song from my new band album @AstronautsSad ‘Adult Fears’ titled: ‘It’s okay’ ‘It’s okay’… I’m sorry for being obtuse or difficult but it’s a process… love».

The song he referenced talks about how it’s “okay to be away from everything you’ve been taught” and to “lose the shame of all the abuse from the churches.”

On last year’s Decent Christian Talk podcast, Max said he had been in a “deconstructing” process for a long time.

«I like to call it deconstruction, reconstruction. Any person who is really changing every day, what we do, you are going to deconstruct it or you are going to reconstruct it. So it’s a combination of both,” he said.

“I have been deconstructing for decades. I’ve always progressed, as you can say, and then sometimes I go backwards. But I think right now I’m really on a journey to find out what I really believe, I’m reading a lot, thinking a lot, keeping my eyes and ears open.”
