.- Nicolás Maduro said through a television broadcast that he agreed to be a guarantor of peace in the negotiations between the Colombian government and the National Liberation Army (ELN). The president’s confirmation was made known from the state of Carabobo, where he was meeting with Governor Rafael Lacava.
Maduro assured that President Petro sent him a letter asking him to be a guarantor of peace in the talks between the Colombian state and the guerrilla group.
Once again, the Venezuelan government agrees to be a mediator in the dialogues that seek peace in Colombia.
Maduro recalled in his address that the late President Chávez was also a guarantor of the peace agreements that were later signed.
“We will do our best, in the name of God the almighty father, for the total peace of Colombia”, Maduro said about his participation in the dialogue.
Peace in Colombia
The Petro government seeks to re-establish talks with the ELN, after having been interrupted with the government of Iván Duque in 2019, after an attack on a police school that left 22 dead.
Petro anticipated “the holding of a prompt meeting with the ELN in Venezuela”, where, according to Colombian military intelligence, there are several members of the insurgent leadership.
The new Petro government seeks to end the nearly six-decade conflict in Colombia.
