Majority of Scots want home abortion to end

CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- The results of the Scottish government’s consultation on whether to allow home abortions permanently were recently published. Only 17% of submissions backed the possibility of making ‘DIY’ home abortions permanently available in Scotland.

Some 61% of respondents expressed support for ending temporary “DIY” home abortion services, while 21% came up with other suggestions on how to proceed, which they provided in a free text response box.

An analysis of these responses by Right To Life UK, showed that the vast majority of the ‘other’ free text responses wanted to end ‘DIY’ abortion services or introduce further restrictions on abortion services in Scotland.

In addition, 74% of respondents indicated that they feel that home abortion services are having a negative impact on the safety of women accessing abortion services.

strong public opposition

This strong public opposition to ‘DIY’ home abortion is also reflected in a survey by Savanta ComRes showing that the overwhelming majority of the general Scottish public, especially women, are concerned about safety, quality and legal issues that arise of ‘DIY’ home abortion.

More than 600 medical professionals have signed an open letter to the Scottish, Welsh and English governments calling for an end to home abortion out of concern that it has led to a number of abortions exceeding the 10-week limit; and that it does not protect women and girls from being forced to abort against their will.

Major problems have arisen

The abortion statistics published by Public Health Scotland show that the number of abortions performed in Scotland reached the second highest number on record in 2020.

This significant increase in abortions prompted the Scottish government to introduce the temporary measure in March 2020 allowing ‘DIY’ home abortions in Scotland.

Since “DIY” home abortions were introduced, several major issues have arisen.

According to a leaked “urgent email” sent by a regional chief midwife for NHS England and NHS Improvement about the “increased risks” of “DIY” home abortions, several women went to Emergency Departments for incidents including pain and significant bleeding, rupture of ectopics and resuscitation in case of severe bleeding.

The email leak also revealed that police have opened a murder investigation into the death of a baby they believe was born alive despite its mother taking homemade abortion pills.

A nationwide undercover investigation found evidence that abortion providers put women at significant risk by failing to perform basic checks before sending them “homemade” abortion pills.

A Right To Life UK spokeswoman, Catherine Robinson, said: “Thousands of women have been put at risk by these ‘DIY’ home abortion schemes and we are calling on the Scottish government to end this, immediately. Every day these services continue, more women are at risk.”
