The return of the prodigal son in the Gospel of Luke

“11 Jesus also said: “A man had two sons.
The youngest of them said to his father, “Father, give me my share of the inheritance.” And the father divided his goods among them.
A few days later, the younger son gathered up everything he had and went to a far country, where he squandered his possessions in a licentious life.
He had already spent everything, when much misery came over that country, and he began to suffer hardships.
So he put himself in the service of one of the inhabitants of that region, who sent him to his field to tend pigs.
He would have liked to satisfy his hunger with the acorns that the pigs ate, but no one gave them to him.
Then he reconsidered and said, “How many of my father’s hired hands have plenty of bread, and I am here starving to death!”
Right now I will go to my father’s house and tell him, “Father, I have sinned against Heaven and against you;
I no longer deserve to be called your son, treat me like one of your hired men.”
So he left and returned to his father’s house. When he was still far away, his father saw him and was deeply moved, ran to meet him, hugged him and kissed him.
The young man said to him, “Father, I have sinned against Heaven and against you; I do not deserve to be called your son.”
But the father said to his servants, “Bring the best clothes and dress him right away, put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s eat and party
because my son was dead and has come back to life, he was lost and was found.” And the party began.
The older son was in the field. When he returned, near the house, he heard the music and the choirs that accompanied the dance.
And calling one of the servants, he asked him what that meant.
He replied, “Your brother has returned, and your father had the calf killed and fattened, because he has brought it back safe and sound.
He was angry and would not go in. His father came out to beg him to come in,
But he replied, “I have served you for so many years without ever disobeying a single one of your orders, and you never gave me a kid to have a party with my friends.
And now that this son of yours has returned, after spending your goods on women, you have the fattened calf slaughtered for him!
But the father said to him, “My son, you are always with me, and everything that is mine is yours.
It is right that there be celebration and joy, because your brother was dead and has come to life, he was lost and has been found.

The prodigal son

After seeing all the wealth that his father had just given him, the prodigal son decided to become independent and go live a life of complete debauchery. By the way, sometimes we can be like that son who distances himself from his father because he considers that the inheritance received is enough to be happy. Let us keep in mind that, although God is a good Father who gives us his graces in abundance (goods, health, wisdom, intelligence, family,…), this should not distance us from Him. In this regard, in the Bible we can read the following : “But be careful: do not forget the Lord, your God, nor fail to observe his commandments, his laws and his precepts, which I prescribe for you today. And when you eat your fill, when you build comfortable houses and live in them.” (Deuteronomy 8:11-12). Our Father’s desire is that our hearts remain united to Him, so that we can say: “(…) God is my heritage forever and the Rock of my heart. (Psalm 72:26)
