The Parable of the Sower in the Gospel of Matthew
“1 That day Jesus left the house and sat by the seashore.
2 A large crowd gathered around him, so he had to get into a boat and sit in it, while the crowd remained on shore.
3 Then he spoke to them at length by means of parables. He told them: “The sower went out to sow.
4 As he scattered the seeds, some fell by the roadside and the birds ate them.
5 Others fell on rocky ground, where there was not much soil, and sprouted right away, because the soil was shallow;
6 But when the sun rose, they were scorched and, for lack of root, withered.
7 Others fell among thorns, and these, growing, choked them.
8 Others fell on good ground and bore fruit: a hundred, another sixty, another thirty.
9 Let him who has ears hear!” (Matthew 13: 1-9).

Explanation of Jesus to his disciples
“18 Hear, then, what the parable of the sower means.
19 When someone hears the Word of the Kingdom and does not understand it, the Evil One comes and snatches what had been sown in his heart: this is the one who received the seed by the wayside.
20 He who receives it on rocky ground is the man who, hearing the Word, immediately accepts it with joy,
21 but it does not allow it to take root, because it is inconstant: as soon as there is tribulation or persecution because of the Word, it immediately succumbs.
22 The one who receives the seed among thorns is the man who listens to the Word, but the worries of the world and the seduction of riches choke it, and it cannot bear fruit.
23 And the one who receives it on fertile ground is the man who hears the Word and understands it. It produces fruit, whether it be a hundred, or sixty, or thirty times one.” (Matthew 13: 18-23).
