The parable of the ten virgins It is found in the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus told this word to his disciples a few days after his crucifixion, with the purpose of announcing the events that will mark the end of times Y her return. In fact, in this parable Jesus illustrates how the rapture of the Church will take place through the story of ten virgins. In this parable it speaks of five virgins “did you know” either “prudent“and five virgins”foolish” either “foolish” who awaited the return of her husband. Let us discover this biblical passage in which Jesus invites us to watch and pray at all times.

The wise and foolish virgins
“1 Therefore, the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten young people who went with their lamps to meet the bridegroom.
2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
3 The foolish took their lamps, but without providing themselves with oil,
4 while the wise took their lamps and also filled their jars with oil.
5 As the husband kept waiting, they all got sleepy and fell asleep.
6 But at midnight a cry was heard: “The bridegroom is coming, meet him!”
7 Then the young women woke up and prepared their lamps.
8 The foolish said to the wise, “Could you give us some oil, because our lamps are going out?”
9 But they replied: “It won’t be enough for everyone. It’s better that you go buy it at the market.”
10 Meanwhile, the bridegroom arrived: those who were ready went with him into the bridal room, and the door was closed.
11 Then the other girls came and said, “Lord, Lord, open up for us.”
12 but he answered: “I assure you that I do not know them.”
13 Be on your guard, because you do not know the day or the hour.”
I don’t know them
In this parable it is clearly explained that of the ten virgins who were waiting to receive their husband, only five were able to enter the wedding hall before the door was closed, while the other five were rejected, and even the groom told them : “I don’t know them”. It may be that when reading this passage we feel a little afraid if we put ourselves in the shoes of these five virgins who may have had good intentions, but who were rejected for their lack of caution and wisdom. In fact, these virgins symbolize the Church: the Bible says on multiple occasions that Jesus will return for his Bride. The foregoing means that we too are called to prepare ourselves for this encounter with Jesus, our Spouse. Having said this, let us not forget to take a little oil with us!: the oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit, and it is precisely He who will help us to keep our flame burning for the Lord Jesus.
watch and pray
Every time Jesus gave a parable about his return, he also gave a very clear instruction to his disciples: “watch and pray!… Perhaps you wonder how we should watch in our daily lives; For this, the parable of the ten virgins teaches us that we must try to take with us all the weapons that God gives us to wait until He comes looking for us. And specifically, what are these weapons? In this regard, the Bible says in the letter to the Ephesians, chapter 6 the following: “Clothe yourselves with the armor of God, so that you can resist the snares of the devil. Because our fight is not against enemies of flesh and blood, but against the Principalities and Powers, against the Sovereigns of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits that dwell in space. Therefore, take on the armor of God, to that they can resist on the bad day and stand firm after having overcome all obstacles. Stand tall, girded with the belt of truth and wearing justice as a breastplate. Shoe your feet with zeal to spread the Good News of peace. Always have in your hand the shield of faith, with which you will be able to extinguish all the fiery arrows of the Evil One. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” (Ephesians 6:11-17). Let us keep in mind that Jesus commands us to watch and pray, that is, it is not just about waiting, but about doing it in prayer. The apostle Paul refers to this by saying: “Constantly raise all kinds of prayers and supplications, animated by the Spirit. Dedicate yourselves with tireless perseverance to intercede for all the brothers.” (Ephesians 6:18)
