MOZAMBIQUE. – Amid the rubble of a church, Christians affected by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique gathered for an open-air service on Sunday (24).
The images recorded by the pastor of the Renewed Presbyterian Church, in the city of Beira, show a group of women dancing and singing hymns of gratitude to God.
“We have to thank God for all that He has done for us. Our houses fell, but God always deserves to be praised. We are here to praise our God,” Pastor Adelino Nsona said in the video.
The church is supported by Mission Outreach Hands (MME), which has more than 350 churches and children’s centers throughout the three countries affected by the cyclone.
Cyclone Idai reached the city of Beira with winds of up to 170 kilometers per hour, before moving on to Zimbabwe and Malawi, destroying houses and killing at least 656 people.
According to Elías Caetano, director of the MME, there are three most urgent needs: food, medicine and reconstruction. “In these floods, they end up losing everything and they need food and medicine – many were injured in falling houses,” he said.
