CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- The apologist Josh McDowell announced that he would take a step back in his ministry, after he made racist comments at the conference of the American Association of Christian Counselors.
McDowell said blacks and other minorities don’t have the same opportunities because they grew up in families where education wasn’t important.
The apologist who has authored some 150 books drew criticism within the Christian community for his statements.
The author said that he was taking a step back from his ministry and hoped to hear more, especially in the areas where he needs to grow.
“During this time of meeting others and learning, I hope to grow personally and better understand how I can help contribute to the reconciliation and unity that God desires for all of us.”
McDowell also said that he will continue to work at the ministry, but his work will be overseen by CEO Duane Zook.

Central Baptist College professor Aaron New said via Twitter that he was surprised by the apologist’s words.
“I’m not someone of much importance. So he doesn’t owe me anything,” she added. “But I think (McDowell) should clarify or explain or apologize, just for starters,” Aaron said.
For his part, Grove City College professor Warren Throckmorton wrote on his blog that McDowell failed to take into account the reasons for the lack of opportunities.
“He spent the first 10 minutes of his AACC speech criticizing the concept of structural impediments to equity. So, Mr. McDowell, what is the reason for the lack of equal opportunity?” Throckmorton said.
Likewise, the writer said that he hopes this is a moment of reflection for white evangelicals on the CRT.
On the other hand, McDowell apologized shortly after his controversial statement, also expressing that he feels a Christian love for all races and ethnic groups, and that he hopes to continue fighting racism within the church to restore unity in God.
