Peru: Opinion on a gender identity law approved

– This Monday the Commission for Women and the Family of the Congress of the Republic of Peru approved an opinion that proposes a gender identity law. The initiative aims to protect the rights of transsexual people.

The initiative was approved with four votes in favor and two against, the proposal will be debated in plenary, according to El Comercio.

The reactions did not wait, one of them was that of congressman Alberto de Belaúnde, who spoke out through his social networks.

“Historical day: The prediction of the gender identity law was approved by a majority in the Commission for Women and Family,” said the congressman.

Likewise, congresswomen Mónica Saavedra, Rocio Silva Santisteban and Arlette Contreras, who voted in favor, spoke.

This opinion proposes respect for self-perceived identity and the free development of personality. The bill was presented by former congresswomen Indira Huilca and Marisa Glave, in 2016.

After the approval of the Huilca opinion, he spoke showing his congratulations to the people who demanded this law.

“Congratulations to IXs activists and organizations that have been fighting for years for this just demand. It is a first step that reminds us of how much postponement trans people live,” Huilca wrote.

The Ombudsman’s Office asked Congress to put the Gender Identity Law on the agenda and approve it immediately.

“We highlight the approval of the ruling that recognizes the right to gender identity… we ask the Plenary of the Congress of the Republic to debate and approve the rule in the shortest possible time,” they demanded.

The opinion must be debated and approved in the plenary session of the Congress of the Republic before being promulgated. However, it may undergo some changes before reaching a final version or it may be returned to the Commission for review.
