CHRISTIANNEWS.COM.- A small plane operated by a missionary organization crashed into a frozen lake in southwest Alaska on Saturday (5). Miraculously, all five people on board survived their injuries.
“We praise God for his protection and mercy,” declared the SEND International ministry on Facebook on Monday (7).
The Cessna 206 aircraft, used by the mission for ministerial purposes, crashed into the icy waters of Lake Iliamna at around 12:35 p.m. Shortly before rescue teams arrived on the scene, local residents, some on motorcycles snow, managed to help the victims.
At the time of the accident, a pilot from the SEND North group and four passengers were on board. All were transported to Anchorage-area hospitals and are in stable condition, the mission said.
“Join us in praying for the pilot and passengers, their families, and our SEND North team,” the missionary group urged.
The vision
SEND North’s vision is to reach the communities of the 60/7 Window with the Gospel, that is, regions with harsh climates, extensive geography, isolated communities, and immense spiritual needs. These regions include Alaska and three Canadian territories: Yukon, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories.
The Cessna 206, a single-engine propeller plane, was en route to the small Levelock community of Port Alsworth until it crashed into the frozen Iliamna Lake.
Bad weather and visibility prevented teams from the US Coast Guard and Alaska Air National Guard from safely reaching the region to pick up and transport the victims, said Austin McDaniel, spokesman for the Department of Safety Alaska Public, to Associated Press.
McDaniel said that without “the help of willing local Alaskans,” including a clinic, airlines, search and rescue volunteers, and local residents, “this could have had a different outcome.”
