Prayer for Holy Saturday and the Easter Vigil

Holy Saturday is the last day of Paschal Triduum (Thursday, Friday and Holy Saturday), leading up to Easter Day. It is on Saturday night that the Easter Vigil, one of the most important celebrations of the Christian liturgical year. The vigil concludes this long time of silence of the Lent and prepares us for the joy of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The easter baptismsespecially those of the catechumens, are made during this celebration and we can sing hallelujah again! Here are three prayers to live this special night!

A prayer for Holy Saturday

“Almighty Lord, whose Only Begotten descended to the place of the dead and emerged victorious from the tomb, we ask you to grant all your faithful, buried with Christ by baptism, also rise with him to eternal life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

This prayer is specific to the day of Holy Saturday, but we can entrust each of our days to God and praise him with a morning prayer.

Two prayers for the Easter Vigil

Opening Prayer

“O God, who illuminates this holy night with the glory of the Lord’s Resurrection, revive in your Church the filial spirit, so that, renewed in body and soul, we give ourselves fully to your service. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen”

Prayer of Saint Josemaría Escrivá

“I will climb to the foot of the Cross,

I will cling to the cold body,

corpse of Christ,

with the fire of my love…,

I will unnail it with my reparations

and mortifications…

I will wrap it with the new canvas

of my clean life,

and I will bury it in my chest of living rock,

from where no one can tear it from me,

and there, Lord, rest!

When the whole world leaves you

and despise…, I will serve you, Lord.”

(Stations of the Cross, XIV, 1.)
