During the celebration of a funeral in the church, different prayers are usually recited to commend the soul of the deceased to the Lord. Some prayers are read by the priest or officiant, however, some prayers may also be read by relatives of the deceased, for example, the universal or prayer of the faithful. In addition, those close to the deceased can choose a prayer to give thanks for your lifefor his achievements, for the moments shared with him and for ask our merciful Father to receive him in his bosom and in his light. For this purpose, we can choose some catholic prayers, such as the prayer De Profundis, which is found in the book of Psalms, or we can also go to spiritual texts and poems.

Prayer for a deceased loved one
“Holy Father, eternal and Almighty God, we ask you for (the name of the deceased), who you called from this world.
Give him happiness, light and peace. May he, having passed through death, participate with the saints in eternal light, as you promised Abraham and his descendants.
May his soul suffer no more, and you deign to resurrect him with the saints on the day of resurrection and reward.
Forgive him his sins, so that together with you he may attain immortal life in the eternal kingdom.
Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
prayer for a deceased
Oh God! Our creator and redeemer, with your power Christ conquered death and returned to you glorious. May all your children who have gone before us in faith (especially N…) participate in your victory and enjoy forever the vision of your glory where Christ lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. centuries. Amen.
Give them, Lord, eternal rest. Let perpetual light shine for them. Rest in peace. Amen.
Mary, Mother of God, and Mother of mercy, pray for us and for all those who have died in the lap of the Lord. Amen.”
Prayer of Saint Augustine
“Don’t cry if you loved me. If you knew the gift of God and what Heaven is! If you could hear the song of the Angels and see me in their midst! If you could see with your eyes the horizons, the eternal fields and the new paths that I traverse! If only you could for a moment contemplate as I do the beauty before which all beauties pale!
Believe me: when death comes to break your ties as it has broken those that chained me and, when one day that God has fixed and knows, your soul comes to this Heaven in which mine has preceded you, that day you will return to see the one who loved you and who always loves you, and you will find his heart with all its purified tenderness.
You will see me again, but transfigured and happy, no longer awaiting death, but advancing with you along the new paths of Light and Life, intoxicatedly drinking at the feet of God a nectar from which no one will ever be satisfied. Amen.”

Universal prayer for the dead
During the funeral celebration in churchthe faithful pray a collective prayer, which is known as the universal prayer or prayer of the faithful. The latter includes different prayer intentions. In this case, the deceased and his relatives will be presented mainly. However, more general intentions can also be included, for example, deceased family members, the sick, the elderly, the suffering, the Church, etc.). For this, the family will be asked to write the prayers, with the help of the designated parish team for bereaved families, or with the help of the priest.
You can find examples of prayer intentions for funerals, as well as tips on how to write the prayer of the faithful for funerals.
Why and how should we pray after the funeral?
The death of a loved one is a very delicate moment. While it is true that death is painful, in some circumstances it can be even more traumatic. When we go through such difficult times, regardless of our beliefs, most of us feel the need to have a spiritual recollection, that is, to concentrate our thoughts on spirituality. For this reason, prayer allows us open the heart to the spirit of consolation that God sent, also allows us introduce those most affected for this death (widow/widower, parents, children), and accompany the soul of the deceased in his encounter with the Father.
As the days, months, years go by, the pain oppresses us less, and the absence becomes more bearable, however, our dead always need our prayers. We must not forget to pray for them, and to ask them to pray for us as well. Our relationship with them does not end with death, but remains very much alive.
For example, we can take advantage of November 2, the day of the dead, to pray for the dead of our families and visit their graves. Similarly, we can simply include them in our evening prayer, or say an Our Father or a Hail Mary for them. In addition, masses for the deceased can be celebrated, in which the priest will say an intention and the entire congregation will present the deceased in his prayers.
The souls in purgatory also need our prayers very much, since they purify themselves in the hope of being able to join the Lord, and our prayers help them to do so. So let’s not forget to pray for them whenever possible.
