I will sing the mercies of the Lord forever;
from generation to generation I will make your faithfulness known with my mouth.
Because I said: Forever mercy will be built;
in heaven itself you will establish your faithfulness.
I made an agreement with my chosen one;
I swore to David my servant, saying:
Forever I will establish your descendants,
and I will build your throne from generation to generation. Selah
And the heavens will celebrate your wonders, O Lord,
also your faithfulness in the congregation of saints,
for who in heaven can compare with Jehovah?
Who among the sons of the mighty will be like Jehovah?
God is fearsome in the great congregation of saints,
and formidable over all who are around him.
O Jehovah God of hosts,
who like you? You are mighty, Jehovah,
and your faithfulness surrounds you.
You have dominion over the roughness of the sea;
when its waves rise, you calm them.
You crushed Rahab like someone wounded to death;
with the arm of your power you scattered your enemies.
Yours are the heavens, yours also the earth;
the world and its fullness, you founded them.
The north and the south, you created them;
Tabor and Hermon will sing with joy in your name.
Yours is the mighty arm;
strong is your hand, exalted your right hand.
Justice and judgment are the foundation of your throne;
mercy and truth go before your face.
Blessed is the people who know how to acclaim you;
they will walk, O Lord, in the light of your countenance.
In your name they will rejoice all day,
and in your righteousness they will be exalted.
Because you are the glory of his strength,
and by your goodwill you will increase our power.
For Jehovah is our shield;
and our king is the Holy One of Israel.
Then you spoke in vision to your saint
and you said: I have given help to a mighty man;
I have exalted a chosen one of my people.
I found David my servant;
I anointed him with my holy oil.
With him my hand will be established;
also my arm will strengthen it.
The enemy will not overwhelm him,
nor son of iniquity will afflict him.
Rather I will crush his enemies before him,
and I will smite their adversaries.
And my fidelity and my mercy will be with him,
and in my name his power will be exalted.
I will also put his hand on the sea,
and his right hand over the rivers.
He will cry out to me: You are my father,
my God, and the rock of my salvation.
I will also make him my firstborn,
the most exalted of the kings of the earth.
Forever I will preserve my mercy,
and my agreement will be firm with him.
And I will establish his descendants forever,
and his throne as the days of heaven.
If their children left my law
and do not walk in my judgments,
if they desecrate my statutes
and will not keep my commandments,
then I will visit their transgression with a rod,
and their iniquities with lashes.
But I will not take away my mercy from him,
nor will I fail in my fidelity.
I will not forget my agreement
nor will I change what has come from my lips.
I have once sworn by my holiness,
and I will not lie to David.
His descendants will be forever,
and his throne as the sun before me;
like the moon it will be firm forever,
and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah
But you have rejected and despised your anointed;
you got angry with him.
You have despised the covenant of your servant;
You have desecrated your crown to the earth.
You have breached all its walls;
You have reduced their fortresses to ruins.
It is looted by all who pass along the road;
it is reproach to its neighbors.
You have exalted the right hand of their adversaries;
you have made all his enemies happy.
You have also dulled the edge of his sword,
and you have not raised it in battle.
You have made its splendor cease,
and you have thrown down his throne.
You have shortened the days of their youth;
you have covered him with shame. Selah
How long, O Jehovah? Will you hide forever?
Will your anger burn like fire?
Remember how brief my time is.
Why have you created all the sons of man in vain?
What man will live and not see death?
Will you free his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah
Lord, where are your ancient mercies
that you swore to David for your fidelity?
O Lord, remember the reproach of your servants,
reproach of many peoples that I carry in my bosom,
with which your enemies, O Lord, have dishonored you,
with which your enemies have dishonored the steps of your anointed.
