Many people were cured of their illnesses while the relics were carried in a solemn procession to the church. In later centuries the relics were moved to Benevento, near Naples, and finally to Rome, directly on the ancient site of the Temple of Aesculapius.
When the relics of Saint Bartholomew reached the island of Tiber in the 12th century, the church was rebuilt in his honor. Due to the island’s long relationship with the health of the sick, a hospital was built in the 16th century.
