Saint Bruno he was born in Cologne to the prominent Hartenfaust family. He studied at the cathedral school of Reims, and on his return to Cologne, about 1055, he was ordained and became a canon at Saint Cunibert. He returned to Reims in 1056 as a professor of theology, became director of the school the following year, and remained there until 1074, when he was made chancellor of Reims by its archbishop, Manasses.
Saint Bruno was forced to flee from Reims when he and several priests denounced Manasses in 1076 as unfit for the office of Papal Legate. Bruno later returned to Cologne, but returned to Reims in 1080, when Manasses was deposed, and although the people of Reims wanted to make Bruno archbishop, he decided to pursue a hermitic life. He became a hermit under the abbot Saint Robert of Molesmes, but then moved to Grenoble with six companions in 1084.
They were assigned a place for their hermitages in a desolate, mountainous, alpine area called La Grande Chartreuse, by Bishop Saint Hugh of Grenoble, to whom Bruno became confessor. They built an oratory and individual cells, roughly following the rule of Saint Benedict, and thus began the Carthusian Order. They embraced a life of poverty, manual labor, prayer, and manuscript transcription, though they did not yet have a written rule.
The fame of the group and its founder spread, and in 1090, Bruno was brought to Rome, against his will, by Pope Urban II as a papal adviser on the reform of the clergy. Bruno convinced Urban to allow him to resume his hermitage status, founded Santa Maria in La Torre in Calabria, refused the Pope’s offer of the Archbishopric of Reggio, became close friends with Count Robert of Sicily and remained there until his death on 6 October. He wrote several commentaries on the psalms and epistles of Saint Paul.
He was never formally canonized due to the Carthusians’ aversion to public honors, but Pope Leo X gave the Carthusians permission to celebrate his feast in 1514, and his name was placed on the Roman calendar in 1623. His party is on October 6.
