Saint Cecilia, is the patron saint of musicians. The feast in her honor is celebrated in many churches around the world such as: Latin Catholic, Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox and in the Anglican Communion on November 22. She is one of seven women, excluding the Blessed Virgin, commemorated by her name in the Canon of the Mass.
Saint Cecilia was born into an illustrious Roman family. She became a Christian and dedicated her virginity to our Lord Jesus Christ. Her parents, however, insisted on marrying her to a young noble Roman knight named Valeriana.
On the day of their marriage, Cecilia spoke frankly with her husband and told him that she had promised her virginity to God and was defended by an angel who would certainly punish him if he did not keep his promise.
Although the details of her story do not seem realistic, her existence and martyrdom are considered historical fact. She is said to have been beheaded with a sword. In the fourth century she founded in the Trastevere district of Rome a Roman Christian church, Santa Cecilia, supposedly on the site of the house in which she lived. Several musical compositions have been dedicated to Santa Cecilia, and her feast has become the occasion for festivals and musical concerts, it is celebrated on November 22.
