History of Saint George
The life of Saint George is not entirely clear, but according to various traditions he was one of the most revered saints of the Church in the Middle Ages.
It is believed that he was born in Cappadocia in the 3rd century. Saint George’s father was an important Roman official who died long after the saint was born.
As a consequence, his mother, Policronia, took him to live in Lydda (present-day Lod, Israel). In those cities Jorge learned everything related to Christianity.
When he came of age, he chose to follow in his father’s footsteps and joined the Roman army. He quickly began to ascend, all thanks to his discipline. For this reason, he became the personal guard of Emperor Diocletian in Nicomedia.
He remained for a few years in Diocletian’s personal guard until the emperor authorized the persecution of Christians.
Because of that, Saint George confessed that he was a Christian, for which he was arrested and later tortured by order of Diocletian.
He was executed on April 23, 303 in front of the walls of Nicomedia, after having been martyred for a few days. The mortal remains of him were brought to Lydda.
In the year 494 he was canonized by Pope Gelasius I. As the years passed, the legend of Saint George became more widely known and his number of faithful began to grow rapidly.
In the Middle Ages his tomb was very visited by faithful from different parts; however, during the crusades it was destroyed by order of Sultan Saladin.
In the fourteenth century he was named patron of England and, shortly after, of the Order of the Garter.
Added to this, other countries also named him patron, such as Germany, Lithuania or Portugal. Likewise, he became the saint of farmers, prisoners, soldiers and blacksmiths.
