Saint John Baptist he was a contemporary of Christ known for his evangelism and his baptism of Jesus Christ. John the Baptist was born through the intercession of God to Zacharias and Elizabeth, who was otherwise too old to have children. According to the Scriptures, the Angel Gabriel visited Isabel and Zacarías to tell them that they would have a son and to name him Juan.
Zacarías was skeptical and for this reason he remained mute until the moment his son was born and was named Juan, in compliance with God’s will. When Isabel was pregnant with Juan, she was visited by Maria, and Juan jumped into her womb. This revealed to Elizabeth that the child that Mary was carrying was to be the Son of God.
John began his public ministry around AD 30.., and was known for drawing large crowds throughout the province of Judea and around the Jordan River. When Jesus approached him to be baptized, John recognized him and said, “I am the one who needs baptism from you.”
Jesus told John to baptize him anyway, which he did, and the heavens were opened, and the Spirit of God was seen as a dove. The voice of God spoke saying: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” John instructed his followers to turn to Christ, calling him the “Lamb of God” and these people were among the first Christians.
After Christ’s baptism, John’s popularity grew so high that it alarmed King Herod. Herod ordered that he be arrested and imprisoned. John spoke to Herod on several occasions and condemned his marriage to his half-brother’s wife.
This doom would be his undoing, as King Herod promised to grant his daughter one wish. In revenge for John the Baptist’s condemnation of her mother’s scandalous marriage to Herod, she asked for John’s head. King Herod reluctantly obliged. John the Baptist died between AD 33 and 36.
The feast of John the Baptist is June 24.and the anniversary of his death is on august 29 and sometimes it is celebrated with a second party. John the Baptist is the patron saint of Jordan, Puerto Rico, French Canada and many other places.
