San Cayetano He was a priest born in Italy, in the bosom of a wealthy family and raised in the Christian faith. He completed studies and a doctorate in theology at the University of Padua, he became an agile writer of apostolic letters, he was a very charismatic man who stood out helping all those people in need.
His canonization was in the year 1671 by Pope Clement X. Our beloved San Cayetano, distinguished himself for his care in the prayer and the practice of compassion for others.
It seems that most of the common prayers to San Cayetano, that can be found today have their origin in the Spanish Theatines. These prayers, along with the Saint’s spirituality, statues and pictures of him, were brought to the “New World” by missionaries.
They are still used today in countries like Mexico and Argentina, with slight variations from those used in Spain. Most of the ones I present here come from Spanish-speaking websites and I freely but humbly translated the main idea into English while trying to keep the spirituality contained within me. To obtain this grace and others that we wanted to obtain through the intercession of Saint Cayetano, we now say three “Our Father” to the Holy Trinity. Then this final prayer composed by Saint Cayetano himself is made:
“Look, Lord, from your sanctuary, from your abode in heaven on high, and behold this sacred Victim that our great High Priest, your Holy Son our Lord Jesus Christ, offers you for the sins of his brothers, and be appeased despite the multitude of our transgressions.
Behold, the voice of the Blood of Jesus, our Brother, cries out to you from the cross. Listen, Lord. Calm down, Lord. Listen, O my God, and do not delay for your sake, for your name is called upon this city and upon your people, and deal with us according to your mercy. Amen.
