Prayer to San Fernando III of Castile – Santoral May 30

Ferdinand III of Castile was a king who lived during the 13th century. He was born on August 5, 1199 in Zamora, Spain.

He was the son of King Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castilla. For that reason, in 1240 he became King Ferdinand III.

During his reign he united the kingdoms of Castilla y León, thus favoring the Christians who were fighting against the Muslims at that time.

He liberated Murcia, Cádiz, Jaén, Seville and Córdoba, standing out for having divine help during battles. In each city he reestablished the bishoprics as an act of thanks to the Lord.

He was married twice; the first with Beatriz de Suabia and the second with Juana de Ponthie. With both women he had a large number of children.

Throughout his reign he was ruthless against heretics and Jews. In addition, he always favored the Christians and was generous with the defeated Muslims.

He died on May 30, 1252 as a result of dropsy. His funeral was attended by the people of the kingdom.

He was canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X.
