Biography of Saint Pancras
San Pancracio was a Roman martyr who began to be worshiped in the sixth century; however, there are no documents that prove the veracity of his story.
Legend has it that he was born in the year 289 in Phrygia, Asia Minor. He belonged to a rich and pagan family in the region.
Pancracio’s parents died when he was very young, so his uncle was responsible for his upbringing.
A short time later, the two traveled to Rome, but before arriving, they settled for a time on Mount Caelius. There they met Pope Cornelius, who converted them to Christianity.
San Pancracio appeared before the Emperor Diocletian saying he was a Christian. The ruler forced him to apostasy, but the little boy refused, for which he was sentenced to be beheaded, but not before receiving a cruel martyrdom.
He died on May 12, 304 in Via Aurelia, Rome, along with other Christians. His body was buried in a nearby cemetery. Some time later, the Basilica of San Pancracio would be built there.
