Valentine’s Day was a holy priest of Rome who was martyred under the emperor Aurelian in the year 270. He cooperated in the redemption of the Savior “carrying the cross after Him.” “Having made the sacrifices of his life for Him, he finds her again” for “victorious in his terrible struggle” God “crowns him in heaven with glory and honor.”
There was a ban on all marriages at that time, except those recognized by state law. Valentin was imprisoned. While he was in jail, it is believed that cured the jailer’s daughter of blindness. Just before he died he wrote her a letter which he signed “Your Valentine” because from this he has become the patron saint of love.
Valentine is the patron saint of marriages, betrothed couples, love, lovers, and youth.
