.- The Teatro 1 Cultural Center in Mexico brought together different artists from the secular scene to interpret the controversial work “Jesús superestrella”.
Some of the biblical characters were played by: Beto Cuevas, Erik Rubín, María José, Leonardo de Lozanne, Kalimba, Enrique Guzmán and Yahir, reports The universal.
The two and a half hour work showed the iconic scenes of the Bible told from the reinterpretation of the Gospels.
The theater was almost full and the play was applauded by the spectators. Some had been waiting since March of last year when the pandemic forced the closure of cultural sites.
Origin of the controversy
The story of “Jesus Superstar” begins in the 1970s, when composers Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice made a concept album under this name, reports The country.
The UK conservative press branded this album blasphemous and tried not to give it enough coverage to go unnoticed.
However, no effort to diminish the fame of this album was useful, since in December it was number one on the American music charts.
The first song on the album, Superstar, had such an impact that it added scope to this project, but the controversy of the lyrics that contained a reinterpretation of the gospels also drew attention.
Although the album was an attack on Christianity, it ended up working for the Lord, giving Christians visibility.
In 1971 this album was used for a Broadway play and in 1973 it was extracted for a film directed by Norman Jewison. The impact of these pieces has given validity to this work that is presented today, informs The country.
Paradoxically, this album managed for Jesus to reach generations of young agnostics, children of the rock’n roll.
Contradiction
Rice and Webber sought to show a Jesus, who was not divine, and compared him to objects of idolatry of the time, such as Rock and Roll stars.
In their work, the composers depicted Jesus as the leader of a political insurrection of Jews against the yoke of Imperial Rome.
In addition, they describe Jesus as a charismatic and messianic leader, fragile, with a disconcerting humanity, sensitive to the carnal love of Mary Magdalene and who was frustrated by the fanaticism of his disciples and by not getting answers from the God to whom he asked so much.
In their work, Rice and Webber did not include the resurrection of Jesus to remove his divinity.
However, that version of Jesus Christ described by the musicians was the one that reconciled millions of young people with Christianity in the seventies, reports The country.
