SAN FRANCISCO XAVIER

His feast is celebrated on December 3

He was the great apostle of modern times, as Saint Paul was of the ancients. Missionary of sovereign greatness, we are amazed by his portentous works. He was the great conqueror of the East, who was opening the way for an army of missionaries.

It awakened the missionary spirit of Christianity. The Jesuit Araoz said that Javier produced no less fruit in Spain and Portugal with his letters than in the Indies with his preaching. His wonderful letters were copied and sent far and wide. Saint Ignatius multiplied them. John III of Portugal, the missionary king, wanted them to be read in every pulpit. They raised missionary vocations in all the universities. May the example of his life continue to arouse them.
