.- The popular pop singer shawn mendes He said listening to the Maverick City worship group sing about Jesus brought him to tears, because he recently began his spiritual journey after growing up “sort of an atheist.”
The 22-year-old discovered that music has great power. “It’s only in the last 2 years that I’ve realized the real power that music has,” Mendes said, reports the Christian Post.
“There is something so interesting because I grew up being more or less an atheist. And now I became much more spiritual and really I’m sure there’s a God, or I’m sure there’s something higherthe universe or whatever, music was the one that did that for me,” he said.
“Watching the Maverick City choir singing about God, singing about Jesus, watching videos on YouTube where they sing about Jesus, I start crying and crying non-stop,” revealed the pop star.
Maverick City Music has released a large amount of worship music in recent years. The group won Top Gospel Album at the Billboard Music Awards for their April 2020 release of Maverick City Vol. 3 Part 1. They have also done major collaborations with Elevation Worship and Justin Bieber.
Mendes does not identify as a Christian
Mendes never said that he identifies as a Christian. He even commented that he also listens to Hindu mantras and Indian songs that make him feel the same way he feels listening to the popular Christian worship group.
“There really is a way that music reaches into the soul and creates. I’m stealing this from Pharell’s uncle’s words in the Netflix series he just released. He says, ‘Music makes words that people don’t want to hear out loud into more enjoyable speech,’” Mendes added.
According to various reports, Shawn Mendes grew up in a Christian home in Pickering, Ontario, Canada. However, he himself claims that he was an atheist until recently.
